Warranted or otherwise, until 2016, the U.K. government had a reputation for stability, competence, and reliability that was grounded on normative guardrails, which prevented extremism overreaction. Moreover, people were stereotyped (rightly otherwise) as fair, honest, stoic, if rather quaint bit dull, but (supporters of national soccer team aside) at least it could be assumed they would “act like gentlemen.” Historically, despite contraindications from its empire, United Kingdom considered to an international touchstone democratic rule, compliance with law, respect human rights.
